Fairy Meadows is a grassy plateau at 3,300 metres, sitting directly below the Raikot Face of Nanga Parbat (8,126m) — the ninth-highest mountain in the world and historically one of the deadliest for mountaineers. The meadow itself is about 90 minutes of hiking from the end of the jeep track, and that combination — the brutal jeep ride up, the pine forest hike, and then the sudden open view of Nanga Parbat — is what travelers remember years after the trip.
This guide covers the logistics: how to get there from the Karakoram Highway, what the jeep track is actually like, accommodation options at the meadow, and what to do during your time at the top.
Getting to Fairy Meadows: Step by Step
Step 1: Reach Raikot Bridge on the KKH
Raikot Bridge (N-35) is the starting point for all Fairy Meadows trips. From Islamabad, it’s approximately 430 km via Abbottabad and the KKH — a 9 to 11 hour drive. From Gilgit city, it’s 77 km south along the KKH — roughly 90 minutes by road.
GPS coordinates for Raikot Bridge: 35.4929° N, 74.5916° E. Look for the Shangrila Hotel sign on the KKH — the jeep booking area is just across the bridge.
Step 2: Book a 4×4 Jeep at Raikot
The jeep track to Tato Village (the end of the vehicle road, 8 km from Raikot Bridge) is negotiated by a local jeep association. As of 2026, the fixed rate is approximately PKR 16,000–18,000 per jeep (fits 5–6 passengers). Private negotiation is not possible — this is a standardised fare set by the local transport committee.
Journey time: 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes, depending on road conditions. The track is narrow, unpaved, and climbs steeply. It runs along the edge of a gorge in several sections and is genuinely challenging — but accidents on properly maintained jeeps with experienced drivers are rare.
Jeep Track — What to Expect
Distance from Raikot Bridge to Tato Village: 8 km
Track surface: Unpaved, loose gravel, narrow
Time: Approximately 90 minutes each way
Fixed fare (2026): PKR 16,000 – 18,000 per jeep
Jeep capacity: 5–6 passengers maximum
Best time to travel: Morning — afternoon light can be harsh for the driver
Step 3: Hike from Tato Village to Fairy Meadows
From Tato Village (where the jeep drops you), it’s a 3 to 5 km hike up through ancient pine and fir forest to reach Fairy Meadows. The trail gains about 600 metres in elevation. Average hiking time for a fit person: 2.5 to 3 hours. If you carry a full pack, allow 3.5 to 4 hours.
Porter hire is available at Tato Village for PKR 1,000–1,500 per porter per trip. This is recommended for families, older travelers, or anyone with knee issues.

What to Do at Fairy Meadows
- Watch Nanga Parbat at Sunrise and Sunset
This is the main reason people come. Nanga Parbat’s Raikot Face (the north face) is directly in front of the meadow, and the mountain turns deep orange at sunrise and blood-red at sunset. Set your alarm for 5:30am. Bring something warm — temperatures at 3,300 metres drop to 5–8°C even in July.
- Trek to Beyal Camp
Beyal Camp is a further 2 to 3 hour hike above Fairy Meadows at approximately 3,900 metres. From Beyal you get significantly closer views of Nanga Parbat’s glacier and the high-altitude base camp routes used by mountaineering expeditions. The trail climbs through pine forest and then opens onto a rocky glacier moraine. A local guide is recommended for first-time visitors.
- Nanga Parbat Base Camp Full Trek
The full trek from Fairy Meadows to Nanga Parbat Base Camp (Raikot Base Camp, 4,200m) takes approximately 6–8 hours one way and is best done over two days with a camp at Beyal. This is a serious physical undertaking. Altitude sickness is possible above 3,800 metres if you’ve come from low elevation without acclimatisation. A registered guide is mandatory for this route.
- Stargazing at 3,300 Metres
Fairy Meadows has zero light pollution. On a clear night the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. July and August offer the longest clear nights. Bring a warm sleeping bag (rated to at least -5°C) and a mat even if you’re staying in a guesthouse — sitting outside on the meadow at midnight looking at the stars with Nanga Parbat silhouetted against the sky is one of northern Pakistan’s most memorable experiences.

Food at the Meadow
All guesthouses serve food — typically daal, rice, chapatti, omelette, and basic noodles. Freshly baked bread is available in the mornings. Don’t expect a menu — you eat what’s available.
